The benefits of L-carnosine.

A small peptide with an unusual job: defending your proteins from sugar. Here's what glycation is, why it shows up in skin, and what the research says.

What it is

Carnosine is a dipeptide, just two amino acids (beta-alanine and histidine) bonded together. Your body makes it naturally and concentrates it in tissues that take a beating, especially muscle and brain. It's small, stable, and unusually good at a job most antioxidants don't do.

The sugar problem

Oxidation isn't the only way tissue ages. There's a second process called glycation, which happens when sugar molecules bind to proteins without an enzyme directing traffic. The result is a group of compounds called AGEs, or advanced glycation end-products. They build up slowly and they're stiff, so when they form on structural proteins, those proteins lose their flexibility.

Collagen and elastin are exactly the kind of long-lived structural proteins where glycation accumulates. That makes it one of the recognized mechanisms behind skin aging, separate from oxidative stress and additional to it.

Where carnosine comes in

Research describes carnosine as having antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-glycating properties. The anti-glycation part is what makes it interesting next to glutathione, since it's understood to act as a sacrificial target, taking the hit from reactive sugar molecules so your structural proteins don't.

Glutathione and carnosine cover different flanks. One works mainly on oxidative stress, the other adds a defense against the sugar-driven side of aging. That's why they share a formula.

What the research shows, honestly

Carnosine's mechanisms are well characterized, and human trials exist. A 14-week randomized controlled trial in adults used 2 grams a day and reported effects on glucose metabolism while describing carnosine's anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-glycating activity.

That trial used 2 g a day. Zenvy contains 25 mg per strip. We include carnosine for its mechanism and to complement glutathione, not as a stand-in for the gram-level doses used in research. We're not going to tell you 25 mg does what 2 g did in a trial.

Why the sublingual route matters here

Carnosine has a specific vulnerability: an enzyme called carnosinase. Carnosine gets broken down efficiently in both the digestive tract and the bloodstream, which is a large part of why oral studies reach for gram-level doses in the first place. Much of what you swallow doesn't survive intact.

That's the case for putting it under your tongue instead. The sublingual mucosa is thin, densely vascularized, and drains straight into circulation, so it skips digestive breakdown and liver first-pass metabolism, the two biggest sources of loss for an oral peptide. Zenvy's strip releases over five minutes for exactly that reason, since transmucosal absorption needs dwell time to happen at all.

To be clear about what that does and doesn't mean: the route protects what's in the strip rather than inflating it. More of a smaller dose can arrive intact. It isn't a claim that 25 mg equals 2 g.

Why it's in Zenvy

Formulating a sublingual film is an exercise in constraint. There's a hard ceiling on how much active fits into a thin strip that still dissolves comfortably in about five minutes.

Within that ceiling we anchored the formula with a clinically studied 100 mg dose of glutathione, then surrounded it with actives chosen for how they complement it: carnosine for the glycation flank, glycine as a glutathione building block, collagen peptides for skin support. Carnosine is a supporting player. We think it earns its place, and we'd rather show you the real numbers.
